City of Sergeant Bluff – yard sign guidelines for election season

Posted
(SBA) - As election season approaches, the City of Sergeant Bluff reminds residents and campaign organizers to follow local and state regulations regarding yard sign placement.

All yard signs must be placed within your property boundaries and outside of the public Right of Way, in accordance with City Ordinance 155.13(2). The Right of Way typically includes sidewalks, utility strips, and areas adjacent to streets that are maintained by the city. Signs placed in these areas can obstruct visibility, pose safety hazards, and interfere with public maintenance operations.

It is also against City Ordinance 155.13(7) to attach signs to telephone poles or Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) sign posts. These structures are part of public infrastructure, and unauthorized signage can damage equipment, create safety risks, and violate utility regulations.

Additionally, Iowa Code 68A.406(2a)(1) prohibits placing campaign signs on city-owned property, in the public Right of Way, or on any property without the owner's permission. Signs found in these prohibited areas may be removed by city officials or other authorized entities without notice.

Following these guidelines helps ensure fair campaigning, protects public safety, and maintains the visual integrity of our community. If you have questions about where signs can be placed, please contact City Hall or visit the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board website.
