Mrs. Newman was born on May 26, 1928, in Florence, MN. She was the daughter of Gaylon and Mary (Kawalski) Soule. Vera lived in Sioux City for a long time, where she managed The Palmer House Restaurant for almost 40 years, six nights a week, from 10 pm to 6 am. Her spunky attitude, bright pink lipstick, and bright red fingernails were how people remembered her. Vera's family will always remember her for her love of country music, her bar of zest soap, and the immaculate yard and home while growing up. She was the biggest piece of the family puzzle and will never be forgotten.

Vera lost her husband on March 16, 1999, to a lengthy illness. She spent the rest of her life surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her three sons, William (Toney) of Topeka, KS, Robert (Dolores) of Versailles, KY, and Gary of Sioux City; three daughters, Pamela (George Nafe) of Sioux City, Sandra (Randy Scott) of Sergeant Bluff, and Kaye (Ronnie Blackmon) of Henderson, NC; nine grandchildren; Brett Newman of Osage City, KS, Andrea (Adam Mumm) of Des Moines, Kari (Derek Downs) of Mayview, MO, Derek Trobaugh (Alicia) of Sioux City, Alicia (Craig Gessler) of Elk Point, SD, Jason (Honey) Newman of Aurora, CO, and Jesse Newman of Sioux City, IA; Kirk Noethe (Amee) of Aurora, IL, and Randi Brunsman of Raleigh, NC; seventeen great-grandchildren, and her many lifelong friends.
Mrs. Newman was preceded in death by her parents, her three siblings, and her husband, Homer Newman.
