Southern Hills Mall Installs Wheelchair Charging Station

Posted

(SBA) - The Southern Hills Mall recently installed a wheelchair charging station. The station is equipped with a 24 Volt 5-amp charger that allows individuals who use wheelchairs or scooters an opportunity to get a full charge in approximately 30 minutes. Individuals use the attached charging cords to charge their chairs or scooters and can charge their phone at the same time with the USB port. The station, located near the JC Penny entrance on the North West wall, provides opportunities for individuals to shop and eat without the fear of running out of battery or having to leave and return home earlier than planned.
Lillyan Rodriguez, Specialty Leasing Manager at Southern Hills Mallsaid, “The addition of this unit will benefit all those shoppers in need of charging their wheelchair or scooter while visiting the Southern Hills Mall. We have also added a seating area for companions as a token of appreciation for being at the Southern Hills Mall. We are very honored and thankful that Siouxland District Health Department (SDHD) let us be part of this initiative by providing us this unit to better the entire Siouxland Community.” Angela Drent, Health Promotion Specialist at Siouxland District Health Department shared, “Through grant funding SDHD was able to provide Southern Hills Malls the wheelchair charging station. We are pleased they see value in adding this important amenity in the community and that they were willing to partner with us to offer one at the mall.”
The installation of the wheelchair charging station at Southern Hills Mall was in direct response to an online survey that was conducted by the All Abilities Health and Wellness Coalition and Siouxland District Health Department (SDHD) earlier this year. Over 60% of respondents selected the Morningside area near the mall, as their first or second choice. This is now the seventh wheelchair charging station located within Woodbury County. Charging stations are also located at Miracle League Park, Chris Larsen Park, MLK Transportation Center, The Warming Shelter, Snyder Bend Park, and the Woodbury County Fair Grounds. For a map of the charging station locations or for more information, please visit the Disability and Healthy Living page on the Siouxland District Health Department website.
The All Abilities Health and Wellness Coalition, organized by SDHD, consists of community partners across Siouxland. The coalition aims to create a healthy inclusive community designed to include people with disabilities. The coalition focuses on reducing barriers, increasing accessibility and creating more physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities. The wheelchair charging stations are just one way in which the coalition is breaking down barriers for individuals with disabilities.
