I feel compelled to write a rebuttal to the Citizens for Responsible Spending mailings. The group stated in their BOTTOM LINE that “excellence in education starts with excellence in stewardship.” I would offer Excellence in Stewardship begins with a willingness to financially support Excellence in Education by investing in our childrens futures through optimal class sizes, skilled teachers, supplies and physical facilities that enable students to achieve success.
The group also cited “making wise choices.” Wise choices include making decisions that value the health and wellbeing of students and staff. Glycol does not make for a healthy environment for young children whose lungs are still developing. I’m curious how many of this group actually took the time to tour the Primary Building. Did you visit the boiler room, or ask how many times the roof has been replaced? The building was built in 1959 making the main part of the structure over 66 years old. The cost of renovations are not bloated/exaggerated, but simply reflect current costs that are only going to increase the longer they are ignored.
“Fiscal discipline” was also a concern. Wasting money on repairs that have to be done again in a few years does not speak to taxpayer accountability. Understand that a bond is not recommended until careful study has been completed and determined to be the best and most responsible option for the district.
I served as the Primary and then the grades 3-5 Principal in Sergeant Bluff from 1991 through 2010. Many of you know me and trusted me to be fair to you and your children. I lead my staff members with integrity and always with their best interest in mind. A healthy environment for children is costly, but it speaks to the reason so many people choose Sergeant Bluff-Luton and know that fiscal responsibility is always valued and protected.
