Sergeant Bluff Public Library is a community treasure

Posted

(SBA) - Sergeant Bluff locals, did you know there’s a treasure in your midst? It’s the Sergeant Bluff Public Library! Located at 503 4th St., and it offers more than you can imagine!

Of course the library features everything you would expect—books for every age and interest, DVDS covering every genre, and physical copies of newspapers and magazines. The library also provides access to hundreds of e-books and audiobooks that you can access on your smart phone or tablet.

But surprise! Sergeant Bluff Public Library also has things you might NOT expect. You can check out dozens of games and puzzles, for example, along with sewing kits and a sewing machine. Perhaps best of all, the library even has a large working telescope available for checkout.

“We really try to provide residents with things they will use in their day-to-day lives,” says Library Director Mary Torgerson. “These are things they can borrow for a while, but then bring back to us. Not only is it more affordable for them, but it’s also practical—as they can constantly have fresh new reads (or movies, games, puzzles, or sewing supplies) without filling up space in their homes.”

And speaking of space, Sergeant Bluff Public Library also has meeting rooms available for rent at an affordable price ($25/hour during library hours; $35/hour outside library hours). Residents can use these comfortable rooms to host birthday parties, book clubs, Bible studies, graduation celebrations, retirement festivities, family gatherings, and more. Limited kitchen facilities are available, as well.

To access everything Sergeant Bluff Public Library has to offer, residents must do just one thing: Get a library card! Cards are free of charge to all local residents AND to students and families who attend Sergeant Bluff-Luton Community Schools.

Along with providing access to library resources, cards also connect residents with a full slate of events and activities hosted by the library—from regular children’s programming, fun crafting projects, historical presentations, conversations with local authors, and much more.

Beyond the library’s physical location, Sergeant Bluff locals can check out the STORY WALK along the trails by the community baseball complex. Stories change regularly, so families can stop back often to read the latest tale on the trail. The STORY WALK is another example of the great value Sergeant Bluff Public Library provides to the city of Sergeant Bluff.

“Each time someone checks something out from the library, we provide a receipt that shares how much was saved by borrowing the item instead of buying,” shares Torgerson, who estimates the library has saved local residents at least $200,000 in the last year alone.

Sergeant Bluff Public Library is open Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Library information is available online at www.sergeantbluff.lib.ia.us, as well.
