Sergeant Bluff now requires permits for golf cart use on city streets

Posted
(SBA) - Residents of Sergeant Bluff who use golf carts to get around will now need to obtain a permit to operate them within city limits. The new regulation, recently enacted by the city, requires all golf cart operators to apply for a permit at City Hall, located at 501 4th Street.

To complete the application, residents must provide their name, phone number, residential address, email, driver’s license number, and the golf cart’s serial or VIN number if available. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and present proof of liability insurance for the golf cart. A $50 permit fee is also required. Once approved, a city-issued sticker must be affixed to the golf cart before it can be used on city streets or trails.

The city has outlined strict rules for golf cart operation. Carts are prohibited on major roads including South Lewis Boulevard, First Street, Old Lakeport Road, and several others. However, they may cross these streets directly and without delay. Golf carts are also not allowed on sidewalks, trails less than eight feet wide, or in city parks.

Permitted golf carts must be equipped with adequate brakes, a slow-moving vehicle sign, and a bicycle safety flag. They may only be operated from sunrise to sunset and must not exceed 25 miles per hour. Operators must yield to all other traffic when crossing streets or using trails and must ensure all passengers are seated in designated seats.

The city emphasizes that golf carts are subject to the same parking and traffic regulations as motor vehicles. Operating a golf cart under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or in a reckless manner, is strictly prohibited. Violations may result in municipal infractions, and repeated offenses could lead to permit revocation by the Chief of Police after a hearing.

Permits are non-transferable, non-refundable, and expire on December 31 of even-numbered years. For more information and to review the full list of regulations, residents are encouraged to visit the city’s website at cityofsergeantbluff.com.
