(SBA) - September is recognized as National Voter Registration Month—a time to make sure you, your family, and your friends are registered and ready to vote. Every election matters, and so does your voice.

In Iowa, voting is safe, secure, and fair. The Iowa Secretary of State’s Office is committed to ensuring every eligible voter feels confident when heading to the polls. To help you get started, there are several resources available. Short videos explain how voting works in Iowa at votingprocess.iowa.gov. For teachers, students, or anyone curious about how elections are run, visit elections101.iowa.gov. You can also watch a video that shows exactly what to expect at the polls on Election Day.

Take a few minutes this month to check your voter registration and share these resources with others. Together, we can help ensure every eligible Iowan has their voice heard.

Iowa’s elections are secure. Your vote influences government. Regardless of the outcome of any election, lawmakers pay attention to the number of votes cast. It’s a powerful way to show what matters to you.

Americans have fought for the right to vote. From our country’s founders to generations of men and women, many have worked hard to secure this right. Honor their dedication by exercising this hard-earned privilege.

More voters make democracy better. With every voter who participates, our democracy becomes more representative and better able to serve.

Here are the important dates for the November 2025 City-School Election. Tuesday, August 26 is the first day to file an absentee ballot request with your County Auditor. Wednesday, October 15 is the first day of absentee voting. Monday, October 20 is the pre-registration deadline and the deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail, which must be received by the County Auditor before 5:00 p.m. CT. Monday, November 3 is the last day to vote absentee in person. Tuesday, November 4 is Election Day and the deadline for absentee ballots to be received by your County Auditor. Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. CT. Absentee ballots must be received by 8:00 p.m. CT on Election Day.

Voters casting absentee ballots under UOCAVA or Iowa Code Chapter 9E should review their absentee ballot instructions for additional guidance.

When voting in person in Iowa, you’ll need to bring one of the following forms of identification: an Iowa driver’s license or non-operator ID (not expired more than 90 days), a U.S. passport, a U.S. military or veteran ID, a signed Iowa Voter Identification Card, or a signed tribal ID card or document with a photo that is not expired. If you don’t have one of these, another registered voter in your precinct may attest to your identity, or you may provide proof of identity and residence using Election Day Registration documents. Proof of residence may be required if you’re updating your address on Election Day.
