(SBA) - We are excited to announce Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School was one of ten schools awarded a Therapeutic Classroom Grant!. The Iowa Department of Education awarded over $2.85 million in competitive grants to 10 school districts to establish therapeutic classrooms for learners whose social-emotional or behavioral needs impact their ability to be successful in their learning environment.

“Therapeutic classrooms across Iowa provide vibrant, safe, and healthy learning environments to best support students’ cognitive and behavioral development,” said Iowa Department of Education Director McKenzie Snow. “We commend this year’s awardees and their community partners for their leadership and commitment to implement best practices in skill building, stress and trauma coping, mental health treatment, and crisis prevention and intervention.”

This grant will provide resources over the next couple of years to work with outside agencies and community partners. At this time SBL has connected with Four Oaks, Northwest AEA and Siouxland Mental Health to begin this work and are continuing to reach out to other partners for support. With the help of these partners we will engage in training and implementation of services in the following areas:

Establishing a multidisciplinary team at the school who collaborates regularly to strengthen and create a set of services to support social-emotional and behavioral programming for students at Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School.

Provide training to high school staff focusing on practices that promote positive learning environments for all students.
Develop specific training for staff most frequently working with students requiring individualized social-emotional and behavioral supports to help them progress towards graduation.

Strengthen, build and grow connections with community partners and families to better support students.

Our goal is to strengthen our practices of providing positive learning environments for all students, clear systems for identifying individualized ways to support students, and sustainable practices that allow all students at Sergeant Bluff-High School to progress towards graduation and make progress towards their future goals.
