(SBA) - Peter Charles Scheitlin, 78, of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, went to be with the Lord on May 15, 2025.

  Peter was born on January 9, 1947, in Glendive, Montana, to John August and Lily (Davidson) Scheitlin.

  He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1971 and was a Vietnam War veteran.

  From 1978 to 1996, Peter served as a Public Works Director for the City of Glendive, Montana. He later worked as the Supervisor of Landfill Operations in Unalaska, Alaska. Peter was deeply respected in both his professional and personal life.

  He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, and woodworking, and he also held a private pilot’s license and loved flying. Later in life, he traveled extensively, having visited almost all 50 states. Above all else, Peter was devoted to his family and was gracious with his time—always investing himself in the lives of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

  Peter was preceded in death by his first wife, Lyla (Purvis) Scheitlin; his son, Jared Scheitlin; his parents, John August and Lily Scheitlin; his brothers, John Joseph, Robert “Bob” (Faye), and George Scheitlin; his sister, Ann “Marie” Davis; and his daughter-in-law, Iris Scheitlin.

  He is survived by his loving wife, Sheryl “Sherry” (Carstens) Scheitlin; his sisters, Lily “Eilene” Treadway, Nancy Kernut, and Kay (Bernie) Schaaf; his children, LeAnn (Paul) Vorhes, LaNita (Bill) Bestol, John August (Tetchie) Scheitlin, Beth Ann (Chris) Delzell, Sandi Ruth (Matt) Bird, and John David (Katie) Zellmer; and his mother-in-law, Sandy Carstens; his sister in law, Lorraine Shultz and John Shultz, his lifelong friend, brother-in-law, and fellow veteran. 

  Peter will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Shaunivon (Amanda) Vorhes, Rachel (Josh) Miller, Dani Roland, Jesika Bestol, Virginia Thompson (Mike DeMarais), Brandon (Stevie) Cross, Rashanda “Shandi” Cross (Nate Phillips), Felix Sornoza, Jansen Paguntalan, Johnniah Scheitlin, Jaedan Zellmer, Aubree (Tony) Walters, Tennaiah Delzell, Zyan Delzell, Zipporah “Ruby” Delzell, Olivia Bird, Victoria Bird, Malachi Bird, Tobias “Tbird” Bird, David Zellmer, Josiah Zellmer, and Emett Zellmer; along with his great-grandchildren: Landon and Austyn Vorhes; Eveangelene, Kazlynne, Kaeston, and Endrix Miller; Miracle Cross; Lily Roland; AJ, Stormi, and Asher Cross; and Victoria and Felixa Sornoza.

  Peter is also survived by many beloved sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will deeply miss his wisdom, warmth, and gentle humor.

  *A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, 10:30 AM visitation and 11:00 AM service at Restoration Church at 4310 Old Lakeport Rd, Sioux City, IA 51106 Sioux City, Iowa, with a luncheon to follow.

*A Military Honors Service will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Dawson County Cemetery in Glendive, Montana. A luncheon will immediately follow at the Glendive Senior Center, 604 E. Grant St., Glendive, MT 59330.

  Peter’s legacy of selfless devotion to others lives on in the many lives he touched.
