SB-L’s Girls Golf is Back in Action

Ready to defend their Missouri River Area Conference Champion title

Posted

(SB) - Spring has finally arrived – which means the start of Sergeant Bluff Luton’s Girls Golf season. The girls are back in action and ready to defend their Missouri River Area Conference Champion title again this year. The girls team was undefeated the entire season last year until the very last match, and they came home with some impressive hardware for the high school wall of fame. The unseasonably warm weather has allowed the girls to get out onto the course for some practice so far this spring.
Let’s look at the lineup and get to know some of the players. First up, we have Ashlyn Prosser. Ashlyn is a senior this year, the daughter of Mike and Nikki Prosser. She’s been golfing since she was seven years old. Her favorite golf course is Majestic Hills in Denison, Iowa. Ashlyn’s proudest golf moment was when she hit her driver 200 yards and she despises her 5 iron. Her favorite SBL golf team memories are the post-meet trips to Culver’s where the girls bond and share a late lunch. Ashlyn’s pre-meet snack is a snickers bar and a Gatorade and her pre-meet rituals are to pray, set up her push cart exactly the same way every time, put her golf hat on, and joke around with her teammates. She keeps busy the rest of the year playing basketball, volleyball, and soccer, and spending time with her dog Charlie.
Next up is Cora Eckhoff. Cora is a junior this year and is excited about returning to defend the Missouri River Area Conference championship title this season and getting more medals for her wall at home. She is the daughter of Carin Eckhoff and has been golfing with her family since she was 3 years old. Her favorite golf course is Estrella Mountain in Phoenix. Cora hates her 6 iron and tries not to use it if possible. Cora’s favorite memory of SBL golf is winning the MRAC championship last year. Her favorite snack before a meet is goldfish and Gatorade. Cora’s pre-meet ritual is to warm up on the putting green and put the exact same way every time. Cora also keeps busy participating in soccer and club volleyball and managing the boys basketball team for SBL.
Kelsi Skatges is another one of our team members. She’s a senior this year and the daughter of Aaron and Martha Skatges. Kelsi has played golf all four years in high school. Her favorite course is Sun Valley and she hates using her 6 wood. Kelsi’s favorite memory of SBL golf is her sophomore year when the team played at Sun Valley and it poured on them the whole round. Her favorite snack before golf meets are veggie straws.
Junior Madison Hilts is back again this year to rack up some more medals. Madison is the daughter of Britni and Matthew Hilts. She has been golfing since she was very little as her dad and her grandpa would take her out on the course. Her favorite golf course is Lone Tree Golf Club in Arizona. Madison hates using her 6 iron. Her proudest accomplishment was last year at districts when she came in at an impressive seventh place finish and just barely missed the cut for going to State playoffs, and also getting a hole in one at Green Valley on hole 5 when she was 13. Her favorite memories of the SBL golf team are the van rides to meets and eating out as a team afterwards. Madison’s pre-meet routine is to take a picture with fellow teammate, Katherine Johnson, and snack on some squeeze applesauce.
And another senior, Morgan Pack, is back to rack up more low scores on the course for us. She is the daughter of Scott Pack and Georgeann Sailors. Morgan has been golfing since she was five years old and her favorite golf course is Fort Randall golf course in Pickstown, South Dakota. She hates to use her 60 degree wedge and doesn’t like to even take it out of her bag. A low moment for Morgan was during a meet when she had a dangerous low blood sugar on the golf course. But her favorite memory of SBL golf was going to Tastee’s with the team after a victory. Morgan snacks on Chex-mix before meets and her pre-meet ritual is plenty of Starbust candy. When she’s not on the golf course, Morgan spends her time with the SBL state championship archery team that heads to Utah at the end of April for Nationals, and hanging out with her two dogs.
Katherine Johnson is a returning junior to help us out on the team. She is the daughter of Andrea and Wayne Johnson. She has been playing golf since she was four years old. Katherine’s favorite golf course is Green Valley and she hates using her sand wedge so she avoids sand traps whenever possible. Katherine’s not-so-favorite memory was passing out on the tee box at a meet one year, but her favorite memories are the van rides to golf meets with her teammates. She likes to snack on Sunbelt granola bars before meets. Katherine keeps busy with soccer, which runs at the same time as the golf season, and spending time with her two cats, Cleo and Sokka.
We are looking forward to seeing the girls out on the links this season and can’t wait to see all of their accomplishments. We will spotlight more of our amazing players in future articles. Please help us recognize all the hard work and dedication that Coach Troy Husen and Coach Paul Wilson have put into this program over the years. The first matchup of the season is scheduled for April 2nd at Floyd Park against Sioux City North, Sioux City East, and Bishop Heelan.
