(South Sioux City, NE) - The Warriors won their 6th straight game (Feb. 13) to even their record at 10-10.  Senior sharp-shooter Emiliano Gonzalez made 7 three-pointers in this one-sided contest. In doing so, he also surpassed the all-time SBL school record for three-point makes in a season.  He now has made 71 three-pointers this season, eclipsing the mark of 70 set by Conner Groves in 2017.  Junior Braulio Gonzalez, Emiliano’s brother, played an excellent floor game and assisted on many of Emiliano’s threes.  Braulio Gonzalez finished with 9 assists and 5 steals.
“We were able to take control of this game early, but sometimes a team can get sloppy after early success.  To our boys’ credit, they continued to be sharp and play well throughout the game.  It was really special to see Emiliano break the season three-point record on a pass from his brother, Braulio.  The Gonzalez boys are extremely dedicated to the sport, they have put in countless hours.  It was fun to see our team celebrate the accomplishment together in the locker room,” said Coach Vander Schaaf

(SB) - The Warriors got an exciting victory in a Class 3A Substate 1 opening round postseason matchup (Feb. 19).
A talented Tornadoes team took an early lead and continued to lead at the halftime break.  SBL roared to life in the 3rd quarter and seized the lead back from Storm Lake.  The Tornadoes kept fighting, but the Warriors finished the job to advance to the next round in front of a great hometown crowd.
Senior Scott Dickson had an outstanding scoring night.  He scored 27 points, many coming on a variety of nifty moves in the paint.  Fellow senior Ryan Hoffman also came up big and played an inspired game that led to 15 points and 5 rebounds.  Sophomore Isaiah Jervik continued to impact the game in many ways, and he had the extremely rare triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.  Junior Brualio Gonzalez hustled all over the court and contributed 8 points.  Senior Emiliano Gonzalez led the defensive effort with 5 steals.  The win was the 8th straight victory for the Warrior squad.
“We came into this game with a lot of respect for the Storm Lake squad.  They have multiple talented scorers, and they were able to generate more points than we’ve typically been giving up.  Fortunately, our offense was strong tonight.  We were able to score 48 points in the second half, and that was the key to victory.  Scott Dickson was phenomenal tonight, so many big buckets.  Ryan Hoffman kept making plays, he had an excellent game, and Isaiah Jervik was also outstanding with a triple-double,” said Coach Vander Schaaf.

(Sioux City, IA.) - It was a rivalry matchup in the 3A Substate 1 Semifinal in front of a full house at Bishop Heelan (Feb. 22).
The SBL Warrior boys lost two close matchups to the Crusaders in the regular season and were hoping to change the outcome in the postseason.  Heelan led by 4 after a low scoring first quarter.
The Warriors played great defense during a strong second quarter, and they headed to the halftime locker room with high hopes and a three-point lead.  Although they continued to play with a lot of heart, points were tough to come by in the second half for the SBL squad.  The game remained tight in the fourth quarter, but the Crusaders finally gained some separation in the late stages of the game to take the win.  Senior Scott Dickson finished his Warrior career with a strong 16-point effort.  The Warriors played this game without senior standout Emiliano Gonzalez who unfortunately was out with an illness.
“My immediate thought is that our boys played with a lot of guts, emotion, and togetherness.  Heelan averages 60 points a game, so our defense really did the job to give us a chance.  Unfortunately, we just couldn’t get very many shots to fall in the second half.  We had some good opportunities, but we just couldn’t convert.  A lot of shots seemed to just roll off of the rim.
Our hearts go out to Emiliano Gonzalez, he’s such a key part of our team, and it’s a tough break that he had to miss this game as a senior.  We were thinking of him tonight, and if we look at the big picture, he had a great season full of fun memories.  Our staff appreciates this team.  They kept a great attitude and improved throughout the season.
We want to express our sincere gratitude to seniors Scott Dickson, Cy Gaul, Emiliano Gonzalez, and Ryan Hoffman.  The future is bright for those young men,” Coach Vander Schaaf said at the conclusion of this contest.
Statistical Notes:
Scott Dickson – 16 pts, 5 rebs, 1 steal; Isaiah Jervik – 7 pts, 3 rebs, 4 assists; Gavin Ahrendt – 4 pts, 4 rebs, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block; Ryan Hoffman – 3 pts, 5 rebs, 2 steals; Braulio Gonzalez – 5 rebounds; Cy Gaul – 2 rebounds, 2 steals; Joe Hardy – 1 rebound.
